<p>The 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing was established at Beale AFB in June 1966 after 16 years of mixed bomber and reconnaissance operations. The SR-71 was operated initially with the U-2 being added in September 1976 following the transfer of 'Dragon Lady' operations from the 100th SRW at Davis-Monthan AFB. The two KC-135Q squadrons joined the wing in 1983. The TR-1 was assigned in 1981. SR-71 operations ceased during early 1990 when the type was prematurely retired from service, permitting the overseas U-2 detachments to be reorganized into numbered squadrons. The unit changed to 9th Wing in October 1991. The two air refueling squadrons were transferred elsewhere, enabling the parent unit to revert to a Reconnaissance Wing in October 1993. Apart from the two numbered squadrons located at Beale AFB, the wing is responsible for Det 2 at Osan AB, Republic of Korea (RoK), Det 3 at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, OL-CH (Operating Location—Camel Hump) at Taif AB, Saudi Arabia, and OL-UK (Operating Location—United Kingdom) at RAF Alconbury.
